What Contractor Qualifications You Should Take and When?

Too many contractors are doing too many qualifications…

Qualifications serve a purpose to aid your experience and allow you to specialise in a specific area of the market.

Problem many contractors are having is they are doing all qualifications such as DipFA, CEMAP, Prince 2, ITIL, Lean Six Sigma, BCS, IMC, CCNA etc… without the end goal in mind.

The image this portrays, is jack of all trades, master of none, which means you will not be known for anything…

You want to be at a point in your career, where you are the go to specialist in the market, where recruiters and employers are reaching out to you for your skill set.

How do I get to this point?

By putting a strategy in place.

For example:

If my Current Position is as a Case Handler and my 10 year goal is Programme Manager/Director

This Is How I Would Get There…

Firstly, I would understand what a programme manager/director does… such as strategic planning, managing, decision making, liaising with the client and senior stakeholders.

I would then start off with becoming an MI Analyst, this will give me the computer technical skills, I would need to present and manipulate data. MI Analysts have strong technical skills in understanding and manipulating data, using Advanced Excel, SQL and Coding skills. I would do this for about 1-2 years to gain experience and understanding.

Next > I would up skill and become a Business Analyst to understand strategy and stakeholder management. As an MI analyst your working closely with Business analysts and other senior stakeholders, so it is much easier to bridge that gap by building the right relationships, once your foot is within Business Support.

Next > Up skill and become a Project Manager, Prince 2 is the leading qualification for this and should only be done if your looking to become a project manager or work as a PMO. Once I have gained enough experience as a PM, I would learn and understand what my Programme Manager does on a day to day basis. So I am able to talk about it when I apply to Programme Manager contracts.

Next > Take the Leap and start applying for Programme Manager roles…

Your career is like chopping an onion. In order to get to the core, you have to peal the layers off first… in the same way we must build the skill set and gain enough exposure to all the other areas, so you understand how they are all connected.

Strategy is key in your career… Play Chess my friends… not Checkers.
